The Youth in New Westminster

by Wayne Wright on October 29, 2011

All people in New Westminster are important, and that includes the youth. So just what has the city done for the youth?

Firstly, I think young people are not that different from the rest of us. Sure they have their unique fashions and way of talking but their needs are very much the same as those of the rest of us. So all our initiatives to make New Westminster a liveable city will benefit the youth as well.

Let me list some specific initiatives for the youth. Top of my list is the Youth Centre in Moody Park. It was designed with input from the young people who will use it. They even chose the colours.

The main attraction is the lounge area, with lots of movable seating, floor-to-ceiling windows with a view of Moody Park. There is a kitchen and computer room.

We already have a skateboard park in Uptown, we have now added a really fancy one in Queensborough, the all-wheel park.

We recognize that not all youth are into skateboarding. Our library now offers ebooks and we have introduces free WiFi on a trial basis in the Uptown area.

The old cinema complex uptown played an important part in the social life of teens. That is why we are particularly keen to see the new 10 cinema complex in the Plaza 88 complex! With easy access by bus and skytrain, we are sure the cinemas will be a hit again.

A Tour of Moody Park

Moody Park is in the centre of New Westminster. We drive by it every day without necessarily appreciating everything that has been achieved. Come with me as we take a quick tour via this short video through Moody Park.
