How Green Are We?

Is New Westminster becoming a concrete jungle? With all the construction going on, it is a valid concern.

Yes, we have encouraged new development in specific areas. During the construction phase it can be quite a disruption. But be patient – once completed, you will see how dramatically the new facilities will improve life. Keep in mind, we are a city not a rural town.

But it is a matter of balance. While we have initiated many new developments we have not neglected the need for green space. New Westminster offers residents and visitors with a variety of urban and natural parks, trails and open spaces that encourages outdoor living.

Few realize that we have 14 neighbourhood parks and nearly 30 community parks – be sure to view the photo gallery at the end of this post. In this past year we have created a number of new parks, trails, and outdoor facilities and there is more to come.

New West a concrete jungle? Never, it is THE city in the lower mainland in which to live, work, and play.

Be sure to visit our Parks, Culture and Recreation website for more information about just how green our city is.

Taking the LEED

No, it is not a typo. Our City has definitely taken the LEED when starting new developments.

LEED is an acronym for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

Wikipedia defines it as “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is an internationally recognized green building certification system, providing third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies intended to improve performance in metrics such as energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.”  For the full Wikipedia article…

Many of our new developments have Gold Level LEED Certification including theYouth Centre, the Civic Centre, the Queensborough Community Centre, the Brewery District development and the new Bosa Viceroy development uptown.

Not only do our project encourage liveability and economic growth, our projects are environment-friendly and at forefront of sustainability.
