My Vision for New Westminster
Sharing
The Vision
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
~ Eleanor Roosevelt
I envision a Downtown Civic & Arts Centre with a much-needed state-of-the-art
mid-sized theatre.
Already budgeted for, are improved sports facilities that will
include a new and improved Mercer Stadium and track, with field-event capabilities
and a proposed field house.
To increase our tax base, a wireless internet public
utility will attract high-tech businesses, and a booming downtown will be a magnet
to new retail businesses.
I
am proud that, under my leadership, New Westminster is BC’s leader
in tackling the
problem of homelessness. Eight shelters are already open or in the
works, but more solutions for this world-wide social problem are needed. Continuing
initiatives to fight crime are also a top priority.
More involvement by Neighbourhood
Watch and more auxiliary help for our Police Services are imperative.
I believe that a Youth Centre must be built as a priority. If the economy
takes the predicted downturn, stresses within families will increase and our youth
will need a safe and welcome place to gather with their peers at no cost to their
families.
And finally, I will continue to support the School District as they tackle the
complicated task of building, upgrading and renovating our schools so our children
are safe in the best learning environment possible.
Much has been accomplished, but there is much, much more to be done.
- Continue Waterfront Park negotiations and encourage public input.
- Preserve and enhance our Heritage Downtown.
- Create a Civic Square and Community Arts Centre.
- Encourage new initiatives to further increase our tax base.
- Support our police in their fight against crime.
- Negotiate Front St. encapsulation.
- Propose new sports facilities at Mercer and elsewhere.
- Find even more solutions for the homeless.
- Assist the School District in every way possible
- Expedite a Youth Centre
Much has been accomplished, but we need to keep our sleeves rolled up.
