Getting
Things Done
Our city is finally on the move in all neighbourhoods, after decades of stagnation.
Queen’s Park Arena has a new wooden lacrosse floor, and the Bernie Legge Theatre
has been renovated.
The Twelfth Street revitalization and enhancement program is nearly half finished,
and in Queensborough, the Casino project has opened up new jobs and created a new
source of revenue for the city, that will provide millions for parks, trails and
a community centre addition, as well as funding for a pedestrian bridge to the Quay.
In Sapperton, a new eight-story condo and commercial project will bring new life
to our oldest neighbourhood. The Labatts site is being planned as a complete new
model community – ‘The Village’ and a newly upgraded public park has been created
at Knox Church.
Downtown,
the Interurban condo and commercial project will replace the old Windsor Hotel,
and the Trapp Block project will retain the original façade of the majestic old
building confirming Wayne Wright’s long-held belief that we can retain the history
of Columbia Street and yet have 21st century buildings that are safe new living
and working spaces for people.
Plaza 88 is a one-of-a-kind project that will see condo towers, retail and commercial
space all built into and above a Sky Train station. Other municipalities are following
our lead and planning similar projects at their Sky Train stations. The site, which
formerly brought in about $60,000 each year in tax dollars, will eventually bring
in about 5.5 million tax dollars annually.
And now, after thirty years of empty promises from previous city councils, an offer
to purchase Westminster Pier, and return the Fraser River waterfront to the public,
is in progress.
